01 December, 2011 – MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions today announced that for the ninth year in a row, it has had papers selected by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) to be presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). MediaTek is number one in Taiwan in terms of the accumulative number of papers it has presented and for the number of years in a row that it has had papers selected for presentation. The two papers by MediaTek that were selected are slated to be given at the conference to be held February 19-23 in San Francisco, California.

Nicknamed the “integrated circuit Olympics,” the ISSCC is the world’s most important platform for papers on IC designs. In 2003, a paper by NTU and MediaTek Wireless Integrated System Laboratory was MediaTek’s first paper to be selected for the ISSCC. No papers had been presented by Taiwan in the four years prior to that (1999-2002). For a number of years, MediaTek has been the only Taiwan business to issue papers at the ISSCC which serves to increase the visibility of Taiwan’s R&D capabilities on the international academic stage.

In addition to giving papers, MediaTek, which has continued to focus on developing innovative technologies over the years, has been a pioneer in technological collaborations between industry and academia. The first enterprise in the industry in Taiwan to support long-term technology training and scholarships, MediaTek’s dedication is evidenced by the fact that not only has it worked with such distinguished institutes of higher learning as National Taiwan University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Tsing Hua University to establish labs in their schools, it has also established long-term collaborations with these schools to cultivate high-caliber technology specialists in Taiwan.

One of the two papers selected this year discusses advanced wireless connection standards (i.e., 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi HotSpot, Bluetooth 4.0+HS dual-mode operation, and GPS/ Galileo/ SBAS/ QZSS) and FM wireless transceivers and how they function in single chips to not only overcome interference produced by coexistent operation of wireless telecommunications systems. The paper also discusses heat energy produced by CMOS power amplifier integrated into single chips and how they serve to greatly enhance GPS reception capabilities. The second paper deals with single chip power management units (PMUs) developed for handheld devices. MediaTek has developed a model that utilizes a 65nm single input five output channel switch step-down transformer that is only 1.86mm2 in size. It takes into consideration about efficiency, size, and cost when integrating it into system on chip (SoC).

Mr. Ming-Kai Tsai, Chairman of MediaTek said, “MediaTek calls on and encourages employees to continuously pursue product and technological breakthroughs and innovations in both the research and development of resources as well as company processes and environment. Armed with the company’s R&D core strengths, we have also been striving to bring the fruits of Taiwan’s technological developments onto the international stage to advance the standing of Taiwan technology in the arena of international academia. Being selected for the ninth year in a row to present papers at ISSCC is both a tremendous honor for MediaTek and an unparalleled recognition of our achievements. In the future, MediaTek will remain committed to developing resources and environment as it promotes innovation to inspire more R&D potential and technology, thereby advancing the international visibility and industrial competitiveness of Taiwan’s technology as a whole.”
